Tarahumara child, Mexico's Copper Canyon

tarahumara guide, Mexico's Copper Canyon

Copper Canyon

You'll fly into Los Mochis and embark on one of the most spectacular train journeys in the world into the heart of Copper Canyon. The first few days of our trip we'll spend on the rim of Copper Canyon at about 7000 feet. At this time of year the rains have passed and the land is green with daytime temperatures in about the 70s on the rim, and in the 80s down in the canyon at Batopilas.

We'll hike to waterfalls with Tarahumara guides and travel to the mestizo village of Noragachi for a memorable home stay with Martha Garcia, the mayor of Noragachi. We'll hike to rancherias and visit with Tarahumara who create beautiful crafts: baskets, violins, sandals, woven wool. For the last few days of our trip, we'll go deep down into the canyon to the little 16th Century silver mining town of Batopilas where tropical plants abound. You can order silver jewelry custom-made from the local silversmith.

With Tarahumara guides we'll hike to other rancherias and meet the people who live in the heart of Copper Canyon. This is a journey back in time. We hope you'll join us on this exciting trip to see Copper Canyon and to meet firsthand the incredible people who live there.
