Ready for a challenge this summer? This high adventure appeals to women ready to meet a challenge – physical and otherwise. This four-day trip covers approximately 22 miles in three days of hiking. We’ll walk through some of the most dramatic, beautiful scenery in the High Sierra. The climax of our trip is the summit of Mt. Langley, at 14,027’ it’s one of the highest points in California. This peak does not require technical climbing (i.e., ropes and harnesses), although there is no established trail to the summit. It is an excellent achievable but challenging introduction to backpacking at high altitude and cross-country travel.
Backpackers with some previous experience are best suited for this trip, but if you are a beginner and willing to train and test your gear BEFORE the trip, it may be suitable for you as well! Please contact us if you have any questions!

Drive to our camp at Horseshoe Meadow. (See directions below and contact us about carpooling) You should arrive around 3-4 PM, so leaders can check packs and distribute group food and equipment. Please come well prepared, having considered the weight and utility of each item in your pack. We will have dinner together at our Horseshoe Meadow campsite at about 6:30 PM. Spending the first night at this elevation (9900') is immensely important – the best thing you can do to get used to high altitude. Many people on this trip choose to come a day or even two days early to acclimate. (Dinner)
Early breakfast, break camp, pack up, and begin our hike to Cottonwood Lake #5. Today’s mileage is 6.2 miles with an elevation change from 9900' to 11,200'. Our route takes us along the edge of Horseshoe Meadow, then switchbacks up to the Cottonwood Lakes area. The lakes are generally warm and shallow, and there will be time to relax and even swim in the evening. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 3, Fri, Aug 22 ~ Hike to the summit of Mt Langley
Today we have an alpine start, in other words, we’ll start walking the summit trail in the dark. You will leave your tents and group gear at camp and hike with lighter backpacks containing lunch, water, trail snacks, headlamp, rain gear, extra warm layers including a warm hat and light gloves. Be advised that our summit day may be difficult. You will hike a total of 12 miles this day, beginning at about 6 AM at 11,200’. In less than 1.5 miles, we’ll hike to the top of Old Army Pass (12,000') and then hike the final 4.5 miles cross-country (off-trail) to the summit (14, 027'). At the summit (weather permitting), we'll have lunch, sign the guest register, take photos, and then retrace our steps. The fantastic views are among the best in the entire Sierra (in the world!). From the summit of Mt Langley, you can see several other “fourteeners” – Mt Muir, Whitney, and Russell. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 4, Sat, Aug 23 ~ Backpack out to Horseshoe Meadow trailhead
Break camp early and retrace our steps 6.3 miles to Horseshoe Meadow (11,200’ - 9900'). You may be tired and want to stay in Lone Pine or Bishop that evening rather than drive home (see Accommodations section below). Carpooling to share driving is also recommended. (Breakfast, Lunch)
