Mt Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest on the African continent after Mt Kilimanjaro. Mt Kenya was originally higher than Kilimanjaro before it erupted, blew out the crater, and later became an extinct volcano. There are three main peaks - Batian, Nelion, and Lenana. Batian (5199m) and Nelion (5188m) are only accessible through technical rock climbing, while Lenana (4985m) is considered the trekkers' peak. Mt Kenya is located in the Mt Kenya National Park and you will hike across the Equator during our trek. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
This trek is remarkably different than that of Kilimanjaro. It tends to be more misty and wet creating a mysterious feel. We will see fantastic flora such as giant lobelias and senecias, and we may have the opportunity to see animials such as the adorable rock hyrax, jackals, and Colubus monkeys. We will sleep in the dormitory style huts in the park.
This adventure is well suited for anyone in good physical condition and a sense of adventure. If Africa has been on your list of places to visit, now is the time. Join us for this amazing women's trekking adventure!
Minimum 4, maximum 12 clients.; balance of $2,295 is due 90 days in advance on 6/10/14.

Day 1 ~ Fly to Nairobi International Airport or transfer from Arusha, Tanzania to Nairobi
Day 2 ~ After breakfast, drive from Nairobi and stop briefly in Narumoru to meet local staff and pick up our group gear and food. We drive to the Sirimon Track and the start of our trek, Mount Kenya National Park Gate. From here, we will hike 9Km up to the Old Moses Hut (3300m). This three hour hike is essential for acclimatization and we will hike through four of the mountain vegetation belts - the tropical rain forest, bamboo jungle, rosewood and heather zones. We may have the fortune to see some animals along the way.
Day 3 ~ We begin hiking after our early breakfast through the beautiful and unique Alpine Moorland Zone. Many call this "Dr Suess-land" due to the unusual flora. Walking time today is 6-8 hours depending on our pace. We will stop half-way for a picnic lunch. We will arrive at Shiptons Hut (4200m) in the late afternoon, have dinner, and turn in.
Day 4 ~ Acclimatizing day. Today we will hike up the Hausberg col (4600m) and enjoy the beautiful and dramatic west ridges of Batian and Nelio, the two highest peaks of Mt Kenya which are only accessible by technical climbing. We will return to Shiptons Hut for lunch and dinner.
Day 5 ~ Pre-dawn summit attempt of point Lenana (4985m). Today you will experience an "alpine start", in other words, beginning to hike before sunrise. We will start hiking around 4am to reach the top of Point Lenana; not only will we reach the third highest peak of Mt Kenya (the only one accessible to trekkers) but the highlight will be watching an African sunrise! If it’s clear enough, it is possible to see Mt Kilimanjaro. We will then descent to Mintos Hut (4300m) for breakfast and a short rest. We'll continue to descend to Mt. Kenya Bandas (1300m) for dinner and overnight. This is the most challenging day of the trek but well worth it!
Day 6 ~ After breakfast, we'll continue to descend through the Chogoria forest to meet
our vehicle for transfer back to Nairobi.
Day 7 ~ Transfer back to Nairobi Int'l Airport or Arusha, Tanzania for your departure back home. Kwaheri!
