The Cinque Terre Region of the Italian Riviera is known for its rugged coastline, rich architecture, and excellent hiking.  The area, made up of five towns of medieval origin along the Lingurian Sea, can be explored from hiking town to town.  Each town has its own unique flavor and culture, just waiting to be explored.

Our journey will begin in Levanto where we will begin our hiking in  Cinque Terre region.  Each day we will enjoy a traditional Italian breakfast and then head out on foot for hiking and exploring.  We’ll pass by gardens, olive groves, ruins, and tall, multicolored houses while hiking.  We’ll allow time for photos and even a visit to the local bakeries we pass that sell delicious focaccia breads and other local treats.  We’ll enjoy a trail side lunch overlooking the sea, in a vineyard, or on a mountaintop each day, engaging locals where possible to learn more about this unique region of Italy.   After our hikes are complete each day, we’ll return to our starting point by train or ferry in the afternoon.  In the evenings, we will dine in local Italian restaurants that serve traditional fare from local farms or from the Lingurian Sea.

This trip is a wonderful way to explore Italy and the Italian Riviera.  Join us for this magical women’s hiking vacation in Italy!

“A walk in the Cinque Terre, an area encompassing five towns of medieval origin on Italy's rugged Ligurian coastline, offers three magic travel ingredients: splendid scenery, varied landscape and a sense of discovery…”

The New York Times - Travel

"My mom and I went on the Cinque Terre trip last summer and had an absolutely stunning/life changing/relationship building/spectacular culinary adventure. Our guides were nothing less than perfect. We learned so much about the history, art, food, culture and landscape from the combination of both women. I'm writing because, as a professional photographer I decided to leave my huge camera at home and shot only using my iphone. I came home with many more frame-able images than I'd expected. I love hiking, touring cities and checking out new cultures."

"Thanks so much for a wonderful trip.  I have come back with great memories - wonderful places we visited, scenery that was breathtaking, making new friends.  The food was exquisite...I could go on and on.  The hard work of putting together a program such as this is very much appreciated."

Day 1 ~ Meet in Levanto

Today is arrival day.  Please plan to arrive by 2pm at our hotel in Levanto. We will go for an afternoon hike as a group to warm up and get oriented to the region.  We will enjoy our welcome meal together as a group at 8pm at a local restaurant for our first experience of the world famous Lingurian cuisine. At dinner, we will have a trip orientation, go over our weeks plan, and answer questions. (Dinner)

Day 2 ~ Riomaggiore to Monterosso

Today, we enjoy a beautiful hike along the five picturesque hamlets that give the name to the Cinque Terre. Our day starts with a short train ride to the village of Riomaggiore. Here we take a brief paved coastal path, the world-known “Via dell’ Amore - Love's Trail". It takes us to the village of Manarola. We reach Corniglia, the next village of the “five lands” hiking up a beautiful switchback staircase that goes from sea level to the hamlet, overlooking the sea from a sheer cliff. In Corniglia we take our time wandering through the narrow alleyways between multi-colored houses before taking our next section of the path to Vernazza. We walk through cultivated terraces, olive groves and woodland, and then along the cliff, with impressive views coming into Vernazza. The trail to Monterosso winds through olive orchards and stonewalls; it’s rough and steep in some places but it offers amazing views over the bay. Then, the pathway flanks high kitchen garden walls reaching Monterosso. Here we take the train to Levanto. This evening, we dine at a restaurant known for its amazing views and delicious seafood. (Breakfast, Lunch)

Day 3 ~ Poet’s Gulf

Today we explore the fascinating beauty of the Poets' Gulf. Taking the train to Riomaggiore we start our walk to Portovenere, tracing the superb coastline and admiring some of the most striking views of the Cinque Terre. Arriving in Campiglia, a tiny medieval hamlet, we take our time to have drink, before descending to the delightful village of Portovenere, elected Unesco World Heritage site for its unique beauty. This breath-taking walk offers marvelous sights every step of the way. The hike offers amazing views over the Palmaria and Tino islands and all over the coast. The name of the ancient Portus Veneris refers to a temple to the goddess Venus, situated on the promontory where we can admire the terrific beauty of the San Peter Church built over a cliff. Option: from the harbor of Portovenere it’s possible to take a boat to the Isle of Palmaria. Here starts an easy walk around the island, admiring steep rocky cliffs, suggestive grottoes and passing abandoned marble quarries. In the afternoon, a panoramic ferry journey takes us to Monterosso, giving us the opportunity to admire all the five lands from the seawater, before taking the train to Levanto and reach our hotel. (Breakfast, Lunch)

Day 4 ~ Madonna di Soviore

For centuries the rural population of the Cinque Terre gathered for prayer to the old sanctuaries that dot the territory, testifying their profound religious spirit. Today, we visit one of these sacred places situated in a scenic and inspiring location. We start hiking inland on an ancient mule path to the sanctuary of Madonna di Soviore.  Here we have time to explore and have a coffee. Our path continues going down to Monterosso. We then walk up through antique stone steps to Punta Mesco, one of the most remarkable bird’s-eye viewpoints over the five villages. Along the way we enjoy coastal views walking amid the typical Mediterranean flora. We walk on the hillside through a shadowed pine forest and along some terraces. The ancient mule path takes us by a historic lighthouse. Then, we reach the ruins of a Chapel dedicated to St. Antonio. We head to Levanto following a trail above the sparkling water of the marine conservation area. Our dinner tonight features delicious local produce and traditional ligurian dishes. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 5 ~ Levanto to Moneglia

Today, we leave the village of Levanto to reach the fascinating Italian Riviera. We depart directly from our hotel to start our walk towards the Portofino Peninsula, discovering along the way peaceful seaside hamlets and villages such as Bonassola, appreciated for its climate and famous for the exclamation of Ernest Hemingway: “Bonassola so sweet, unforgettable, and inexhaustible”. We then continue our walk through the seaside hills towards the ancient village of Framura, with its five tiny hamlets until to reach Deiva Marina. Here we have two options: take a train or continue our walk to the delightful fishing village of Moneglia. We have time to stroll around and enjoy a fresh drink before taking a train to our next base located on the Portofino Peninsula: Santa Margherita Ligure. (Breakfast, Lunch)

Day 6 ~ Portofino

Today, we have a superb hike out of the Cinque Terre Park over to the Peninsula of Portofino. We begin the day through the historical centre of Santa Margherita Ligure before starting our hike towards the glamorous village of Portofino called the Jewel of the Riviera. It’s a perfect starting spot to taste the charming atmosphere of the Italian Riviera. Portofino is a gorgeous fishing village boasting an atmosphere of pure elegance. From here we start an impressive hike along a scenic trail that winds its way above the sea before reaching the medieval Benedictine abbey of San Fruttuoso located in a tiny rocky cove. Take time to visit the monastery before traveling by boat along the coast to Camogli: a small Italian fishing village with houses brilliantly painted, clustered together above the sea. We then have a brief train ride back to Santa Margherita Ligure for a relaxing time and shopping prior to our farewell dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 7 ~ Departure day

This morning after breakfast, we say goodbye to the beautiful Italian Riveria. Please plan your departures for after 10am so that we can have our final meal together as a group.  (Breakfast)
